Ryuouen Robiraki – Limited Ceremonial Matcha for the Tea Season Opening (Uji, Kyoto)

Refined, aromatic, and deeply expressive — Ryuouen Robiraki (炉開き) is a limited-edition ceremonial matcha released each autumn by Ryuouen, one of Kyoto’s most esteemed tea houses. Traditionally crafted to mark Robiraki, the seasonal opening of the hearth in Japanese tea ceremony, this matcha celebrates the transition from autumn to winter — a time of renewal and reflection.

Produced in Uji, Kyoto, where Japan’s finest matcha is grown, Robiraki is made from carefully shaded tencha leaves, stone-ground in small batches to preserve their vivid green color, sweet aroma, and smooth texture. This year’s release (October 2025) carries the signature Ryuouen depth — a matcha that’s both powerful and elegant, layered with complex aroma and lingering sweetness.

Tasting Profile

  • Aroma: Bright, floral, and uplifting — fresh green notes with hints of roasted soybean and nutty warmth

  • Flavor: Deep umami and smooth body balanced by mild nuttiness and delicate sweetness

  • Umami Level: High – rich and savory, coating the palate without heaviness

  • Sweetness: Medium – clean, natural sweetness that harmonizes with the umami

  • Bitterness: Very low – refined and pleasant, enhancing balance

  • Texture: Creamy and full-bodied, whisking easily into a fine, velvety froth

  • Finish: Long and smooth, leaving a refreshing floral aftertaste with soft nutty notes

Ryuouen Robiraki delivers the feeling of depth and serenity that defines Kyoto’s seasonal matcha — a cup with emotional warmth and refined craftsmanship. Its umami-rich yet balanced flavor makes it suitable for usucha (thin tea) preparation, perfect for both connoisseurs and those who wish to experience the seasonal spirit of Japanese tea.
