Ippodo Ummon – Rich, Umami-Forward Uji Matcha with Deep Sweetness and Smooth Body
Ippodo Ummon (雲門) is a premium Japanese matcha produced by Ippodo Tea, one of Kyoto’s most established tea merchants. Made from carefully selected tea leaves grown in Uji, Kyoto, Ummon is known for its depth, richness, and pronounced umami, making it one of Ippodo’s most well-loved matcha offerings.
When whisked, Ummon produces a deep green cup with a warm, rich aroma. The flavor is full-bodied and smooth, led by high umami, followed by mellow natural sweetness and very low bitterness. The texture is creamy and dense, giving the tea a satisfying mouthfeel. Unlike lighter matcha, Ummon offers a rounded, savory character that lingers gently on the palate.
This matcha is ideal for koicha (thick tea) preparation. Ummon is often chosen by experienced matcha drinkers seeking a traditional, umami-focused Uji style.
