Ippodo Seiun – Rich, Umami-Forward Uji Matcha with Deep Finish (Also Known as Shoin)

Ippodo Seiun (星雲) is a premium Japanese matcha produced by Ippodo Tea Co. in Uji, Kyoto. Seiun was named by the head of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony and is the same matcha known as Shoin under the Omotesenke school—the only difference between the two being the package size, not the tea itself.

This matcha belongs firmly in the rich category, offering a deep umami character, smooth body, and a long, satisfying finish. When whisked, Seiun presents a calm green aroma with subtle vegetal warmth. The flavor unfolds slowly, led by pronounced umami, supported by gentle natural sweetness and very low bitterness. The mouthfeel is creamy and composed, making it especially suitable for quiet, reflective tea moments.

Seiun (Shoin) is well suited for usucha (thin tea) for those who prefer a fuller cup, and it is also appropriate for koicha (thick tea) preparation. Its depth and balance make it a favored choice among experienced matcha drinkers seeking a traditional, meditative Uji style.
